Transferring Xbox Game Pass Saves to Steam on Bazzite

Part 1: On a Windows OS (Create, Find, and Export your Game Saves to a .zip archive)

Before moving to Bazzite, you must extract the proprietary Xbox formatted saves into a standard format., there i an application available to assist you with this

  1. Prepare the Game:
    If you have not done so already , install and launch your game via the Xbox App.

  2. Play until you reach a “checkpoint” or manually save.
    Note: Look for a "Saving" icon (usually on the right) to confirm a save file exists.

  3. Download the Game Save Extractor:
    Download the latest XGP-save-extractor application from GitHub.

  4. Acquire and Create Zip Archives:
    Run the application.
    It will scan your system and create a ZIP file for each game it finds and the same location it was run from.

  5. Transfer Files:
    Extract the ZIP file and move the contents (the .sav files) to your Bazzite OS .

Part 2: On Bazzite OS (Importing Saves)

Move/Copy the files you’ve just created to your Bazzite OS, then extract them into the Steam “Proton” prefix where the game stores its data.

1. Locate the Save Directory

  • Close Steam completely.

  • Open Dolphin (File Manager) and navigate to:
    /var/home/johndough/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/

Note: Ensure "Show Hidden Files" is enabled in Dolphin to see the .local folder.

2. Find Your Game Folder

  • Use the spyglass or search bar to find your game title
    e.g., "Remnant").

  • You are looking for a path that follows this structure:

.../pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/[GameName]

Full Example Path:

/var/home/johndough/.local/share/Steam/steamapps/compatdata/1282100/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/Saved Games/Remnant2

3. Backup Current saves

  • Navigate down until you the folder containing the save files
    (usually a folder with a long number)

  • Inside the folder containing the save files, create a new folder named “old”.

  • Locate your existing Steam files
    Example:

    profile.bak1 

profile.sav 

sav_0.bak1 

sav_0.save

  • Move these files into the “old” folder to keep them as a backup.

4. Replace Current Save with GamePass saves

  • Copy the save files you extracted from your Windows PC and Paste them into the current folder.

5. Launch Steam and Verify your game saves were properly imported

  • Open Steam and start your game.

  • Your Xbox progress should now be loaded.
