Support for new gen Nvidia RTX 50 GPUs

Hi all,

Just wanted to get a sense on how well supported is new generation graphics for Nvidia on linux? Do you think the new generation will have good enough drivers on day 1?
I have a RTX 2080 and I want to replace it with a new generation graphic, so I’ve been waiting for the new AMD / Nvidia graphics, but since AMD seems to not be interested in competing in the high end market, I’ve been more focus on Nvidia, but still want to keep Bazzite as my main system.

What do you think?
Cheers

I wouldn’t expect distro support on literal day one (e.g. release day if you managed to be one of the first to get one), but probably not super long after NVIDIA releases a new stable driver version with support for the cards.

If Nvidia releases a new driver with support for the cards prior to releasing them the gap there would probably be smaller, but I’m unsure if there’s any precedence for that and wouldn’t count on it.

As far as driver stability things have cleaned up quite well as of late but there’s still a reasonable risk that there’s bugs with new hardware that will need to be ironed out, but I’m far less reluctant than I would have been in the near past as far as general usability.

Windows is almost certainly going to get the largest amount of initial attention with drivers and will get driver fixes first and I’d probably make sure the OS I’m on has support before I drop possibly around $2k on a brand new high tier GPU.

Haven’t kept up with release dates or whatnot, but generally the higher tier cards come out first followed by more reasonably priced cards. Good odds by the time the more mid-tier cards (e.g. 5070 tier cards) drivers will be mostly sorted.

That makes sense. Let’s see what Nvidia does. If all goes to hell, I might dual-boot windows for a while or run it in a VM with GPU passthrough.
Thank you for your insight.
