Problem getting a screenshot into clipboard

When taking a screen shot nothing appears in the screen shot.

journalctl -xe shows

The screenshot is visible in spectacle and when clicking copy in spectacle the screen shot appears in the clipboard.

This happened first some weeks ago

I should add that the file mentioned in the error message has a size of zero. Therefore, Unsupported image format is true.
