Of backup, cloning, and dnf install on Bluefin

I decided to move to Linux not quite a year ago. Since that time, I’ve installed/replaced a number of distros, trying to learn everything I could. I had decided to settle on Fedora, and then I learned of Bluefin almost by accident.

Although I have vague notions of the “high level” explanation for what is going on, I am ignorant of a number of the details of implementation. For instance, does backup work in a similar fashion to other distros? What about cloning for moving to other machines, etc.? I also want to create a web app of a particular site that is important to me. Linux Mint has a nice app (web app manager) just for that, and it can be installed on Fedora via dnf install from the Linux Mint copr That does not work for me in Bluefin. I must be missing something…. Or maybe “dnf install” is no longer a thing, as Bluefin is image-based?

I’m using an old MacBook Pro (2015) for this experiment, dual-booting with MacOS. If I understand what Bluefin does, it is somewhat similar to MacOS X: The system is kept separate from the apps. Apps and user info all go onto one partition, with the system on an internally distinct partition. The principle of system - app/user segregation seems very similar.

So, are web apps possible in Bluefin? Are traditional backups the same? Can conventional cloning utilities work? Where does one go to learn these things? If this is not the right place, just point me in the right direction, please.

I typically only backup my home directory as the image is the same on all my machines. I suppose you could clone it via a lower level tool onto another machine but that probably takes longer than just installing the same image on a new machine.

For webapps we’ve tried both the webapp manager and the epiphany/gnome-software PWA solution and both didn’t work well for us so that’s currently an empty hole that I’d like to fill. Least worst seems to be using the PWA functionality of a Chrome-based browser, hoping to get nicer things with Firefox someday. :face_with_diagonal_mouth:

Thank you for the speedy and helpful reply. I’ll stick to accessing things through the browser window, not the “disguised” browser window, for now at least.
