CEC with 3rd Party Docks

Hey all.

I currently use bazzite-deck-gnome on my Steam Deck OLED. I know the Official Steam Deck Dock supports CEC, and when in use you would see the following options within the menu for Settings → Display → CEC:

  • Enable HDMI CEC Support
  • Wake TV When Device Resumes From Sleep

When using a 3rd party dock, JSAUX HB0801 8-in-1 RGB Dock, those options don’t appear. I’ve confirmed with their technical support that the dock supports CEC. Has anyone else here had issues getting CEC to work with 3rd party docks? I’ve been using it with my TV more lately and was hoping to get this to work, and if other’s have experienced this issue I’m curious how some of us may have worked around it.

This has also been a major gripe of mine with literally all of the Docks I tested.

My current, working solution is to use a USB4/TB4 dock with downstream USB-C ports and simply plug a USB-C to HDMI Dongle in there that does DP Alt as well as DP to HDMI conversion.

I’ve documented all my research in a git repo available at GitHub - fr4nk3n5731n/cec-dongle-research: Results and notes about my CEC support research endeavour for the Steam Deck · GitHub github.com

It’s a convoluted setup for sure, and quite expensive, ~130-160 for the dock and another ~30-50 for the functioning dongle.

My search is still ongoing and I’ll keep the repo updated when I find more devices to test.

People say the Official dock is overpriced, and yet it’s the only one that can do CEC and even ships with a power supply, so the price actually seems fair/reasonable, IF one could actually buy it. It’s been out of stock for months if not years at this point.
