Blank (black) screen with Nvidia GPU

Hello everyone!

First of all, let me say I am a beginner user and did not used any Linux distro for about 15 years.
I hope I can express myself clearly and sorry in advance for any English mistake I will certainly make.

That being said, I was trying to install Bazzite on my computer and had issues, not with the installation per se. The installation only shows me anything if a monitor is plugged in the on-board GPU (AMD). If my monitors are connected in the RTX 4080 Super, as they usually are, the installation or the desktop after the installation are blank (or black in this case) as if there is no monitor connected to anything.

To being able to install and use Bazzite, I have one monitor connected in the on-board GPU and the other in the Nvidia GPU to check if any fix would work. The one connected in the Nvidia GPU is always blank/black.

To check if it was a problem with Bazzite image, I also tried to start the installation for Mint 22.2 (Cinnamon) with both monitors plugged in the Nvidia GPU, with same result: nothing is displayed. I can only see the installation screen with one monitor plugged in the on-board GPU. I did not proceed with Mint install, just checked if the problem would happen the same.

Searching a little I tried some tips, without any success. Each of these steps I did all in one installation and in separate installations one by one:

  • Installing with secure boot deactivated and activating it after installation. My MB is and Asus TUF B650M-E and there is no Secure boot “Deactivated“ option, just Windows UEFI and Other OS, with Standard and Custom keys option. Tried every combination.
  • Registering secure boot key, during the final stage of installation and after logging in the desktop. The blue screen to register the key appeared only after the first install and no more, which I assume the key kept registered in the bios.
  • Rebase unverified and signed, with nvidia and nvidia-open

In each time, although the GPU is listed with lshw command, when I try nvidia-smi command it returns an error saying there is no driver.

Does anyone suffered with this? Could not find any answer anywhere for my problem.

Some things to consider:

  • My windows is heavily debloated to the point I am just trying Linux to see how it would behave. There is almost nothing running in the background of Windows for me and I install very few programs, mostly games and even them are just a few.
  • No option I choose in the bios for secure boot prevents my Windows to boot up. Don’t know why, but it always boots up.
  • I have Nvidia 590.26 developer game ready drivers, which enables the use of smooth motion with 40 series GPUs.
