Whats the best filesystem for steam games on bazzite

Hi all Bazzitians,

As a long time steam user on windows its been a bit of a learning curve with Steam gaming on Bazzite. Its been a bit of a head scratcher as some games install run fine with others being more problematic.

I had installed a game on an ntfs drive that worked fine then I formatted the drive to ext3 and installed again only to have the game go all unstable and squirelly.

So I’d like some thoughts on which filesystem bazzite steam games will run the best and most stable.

I appreciate your input.

Cheers and Beers

I have always used ext4 for my filesystems without problems

It may not be the filesystem. Assuming this is a steam game that is not Linux native, you probably have to use a different version of proton, or it’s not fully compatible.

Check the proton database to see that status if that is the case.

Hi, Yeah I had to use different version of proton to get it to work. was just wondering if the filesystem type made any difference.

well this was an interesting experience. The game was Terminator Resistance and I had it previously had it running on a drive that Reported it was going to fail. ( I cant recall which file system it was at the time) Anyway my root Bazzite SSD drive is 250 GB so I was installing steam games to other large drives.

I installed the game on two ntfs drives I had installed with the game sometimes halfway loading before freezing. I went through most of the proton option without any luck.

I reformatted the drive to ext3 and bingo the game worked fine after being installed.

I reinstalled the 25GB game over six time with it finally working on ext3. I think this gives some credence to what I originally asked. The file system type looks like it may make a difference in some games.

Well, I guess it made a difference in that case because NTFS is simply not supported on Linux. There are recent attempts to bring compatibility, but yeah, NTFS will cause problems for sure.

Between ext4, btrfs etc. though, I don’t think you will notice any stability or performance issues. It will mostly be dependant on storage speed but an SSD is more than enough for any game you can throw at it. The problem in your case was NTFS and the fact that it is not supported.

For what it’s worth, I’m using ext4 for my non-system drives and they are working perfectly. If I remember correcty one of the recent kernels gave a noticeable speed boost to ext4 format as well so I would definitely recommend that.
