I made the leap from windows after continued 4090 shuddering/stuttering made games unplayable. Tried everything and came to the conclusion Windows is braking my laptop. So did some research, followed the advice of friends and online suggestions for my use case, made a partition and downloaded Bazzite. I knew there was some set up/tweaking but my goodness. I didn’t think id be battling run away keyboards, keys not registering, games my 4090 (before windows issue) was running on ultra settings having to be run on a little above potato to be able to be playable and being forced to play on big picture mode to get at least ok performance. I am not a fan of big picture mode if you cant tell.
The keyboard issue is the most curious to me though. It seems as if after multiple terminal “fixes” I get a day or two before the issues slowly start to come back. For instance I made it about 30 hours since last “fix”. Last night I started to get run away keys while trying to pay for a couple games on steam. No issues at all for about 2 hours. Then while attempting to figure out/ fix 4090 performance on a game (The Last Caretaker) my character keeps walking around without any continued input from me. Awesome, Its evolving……. run away keys hadn’t happened in game before.
All in all Bazzite is better as I can at least play games now. Even if only slightly better graphics than integrated graphics (yes, I have it set in every way to use the 4090 not integrated). At the end of the day though im starting to wonder if its worth it or not. on one hand i don’t have a $2500 paperweight any more, but that comes at the cost of feeling like there just isn’t the support needed for my particular system without constant fiddling.
That puts me to why i put the title I did. There is just too much positive info out about this particular distro being the best if you just wanna play games and have them run great. So what the heck am I missing? I’m not the “I.T.” guy or anything out of my friends or family and had to use a combination of perplexity AI, Gemin,and Chat GPT to even get to this point. That said I do feel like it should be better than this.
