Using different desktops on different user accounts?

Hey All,

I’m interested in trying out the user created COSMIC image, Stellarite. Traditionally, if I wanted to test out multiple desktop environments, I’d set up a different user account and switch the desktop environment in just that account.

However, my understanding with Bluefin/Aurora is that the DE is part of the image that’s installed on the system, so switching users means I’m still on the same image. Would this imply that if I want to keep swapping between DEs on two different users, I’d have to keep rebasing the image to stellarite vs aurora when I switch between my Cosmic and KDE user accounts?

Thanks!

You should still be able to use rpm-ostree (or dnf, once bootc is implemented) to install the additional DE, though I don’t know how big the layer would become or if it would cause any additional issue beyond the usual multi-DE pains.

The alternative would be to make your own image (via the image-template or BlueBuild), most likely, since no one is really doing a multi-DE image.

It’s not as hard as it sounds, but it’s still complicated due to needing to take both what Stellarite is doing into Aurora/Bazzite (which I’d assume would be the base-image you’d want to build on top of).

Aaah gotcha! So I can layer the cosmic de package per the Fedora instructions on their GitHub and then swap on the login manager as usual, it seems like. Thank you n

Yeah, though now that I think about it, is Cosmic packages available on Fedora stable repo already? If not, it might make more sense to use Stellarite as base image and then layer in the KDE and Bazzite stuff.

While browsing the docs to prepare for installing Bazzite on my ROG Ally, I found this: Dual Boot Preliminary and Post-Installation Setup Guide - Bazzite Documentation

It looks like Cosmic requires a COPR to be added and Stellarite is supposed to have “done a lot of custom work”, so I think I might hold off on this for the moment while waiting for Cosmic to get into the official repo. Thanks for the refs and help!
