When choosing an image to download, you can select either a desktop or game mode image. The “deck” images are designed to boot directly into game mode, similar to the Steam Deck. If you’re resorting to complex methods to boot into game mode, something is wrong, as a Reddit user pointed out. This would normally be true, but for me, the “deck” images on NVIDIA hardware are booting into desktop mode instead of game mode, which is the issue I’m facing at home. This problem occurs with both Bazzite 42 and Nobara images, as both crash into desktop mode when gaming mode fails to load properly.
A system update is required; otherwise, appears to enter desktop mode. I believe a system update resolves this issue, although I am not entirely sure what steps are necessary to fix the problem., I managed to get it working again by using the top command and the “ujust fix-reset-steam” command. I did __GL_CONSTANT_FRAME_RATE_HINT=3 steam before I used system update, and I also tried ujust fix-reset-steam also before the system update was done, otherwise yes it defaulted to booting into desktop mode instead of gaming mode on a clean install of the iso image that includes kde in gaming mode of bazzite 42.

That’s the gist of the problem. To fix it on Bazzite, I used a reset-steam-like command I found online: “__GL_CONSTANT_FRAME_RATE_HINT=3 steam reset.” On Nobara, I found the same solution on a different post, which also recommended “__GL_CONSTANT_FRAME_RATE_HINT=3 steam.”
This issue isn’t exclusive to Bazzite; it also affects the Nobara Linux distro images from their website. It seems to be the same problem, and I’ve only tested these images this week.
Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Has a bug report been opened on the Bazzite GitHub page or any GitHub page for the Nobara Linux distro to address this problem?
by the way, I did a clean install using all the images on my older gigabyte desktop, that command is needed on clean installs for the install images, I used my USB drive PNY brand to install it using Universal-USB-Installer-2.0.2.7 version to boot the iso images from the drive, and install them, with that method to my older desktop.

the problem affects current download images as of 5/17 or before that based on fedora 42 for bazzite-deck-nvidia-stable-amd64.iso, bazzite-deck-nvidia-gnome-stable-amd64.iso, and Nobara-42-Steam-HTPC-NV-2025-05-13.iso images from their official download sites.
