Can you post a screenshot of your desktop?
This is a case of thinking Linux works the same way as Windows and requires a bit of explaining the difference in this case.
On Linux, you don’t drag and drop something to desktop or right click and click “create a shortcut” in order to create a shortcut. Instead, you create what is called a .desktopfile.
The important part is, this .desktopfile has to stay in “/home/username/.local/share/applications/” folder for it to work. When this .desktopfile is created, it tells the system to create a shortcut in your Start menu.
So what you did here is you directly took the .desktopfile and put it somewhere else thinking it would work. What you should do is, put the .desktopfile where it belongs and then go to your Start menu, find the entry created. Then, you right click that entry and click Add to Desktop and then put that newly created, linked shortcut wherever you want.
I hope this helps.
hello The strangest thing about it all is that it worked before and I don’t know what I did to it all of a sudden it doesn’t work anymore and the only thing I’ve done is just have some shorts on the desktop and then drag them into a folder on the desktop to keep it organized, and I’ve also found out that Linux didn’t work like Windows but try to figure out how to use Linux but it seems a little good already when I switched that it doesn’t work the same way
but also another thing that is strange is that it works on the desktop but then when I drag it into the folder it doesn’t work anymore
I have found a solution, I open the folder and then go to the top-corner press settings at dolphin something had been changed and I clicked on default and apply in the bottom cornerthen it worked, I thought I had been there before and tried to do that but I may have forgotten to press apply.
.desktop files should work from any location. They won’t show up in the launcher or menu if you place them in a random location but you can use those .desktop files to launch applications.
So if someone prefers to launch applications off their Desktop, they can copy(or symlink) the .desktop files there and it should work fine.
Poor wording on my part for sure. I meant it should be kept in that directory for it to appear in start menu. Thanks for the clarification ![]()
