So I installed microsoft edge with rpm-ostree and VPN settings under browser essentials seems to be missing from the linux version?

under windows 11 and my other desktop there is a browser essentials setting called VPN now I don’t normally use that, but when I did get the rpm from microsoft website, the version I guess I installed of the browser seems to be missing that feature. the rpm is located on their business download page, the rpm version seems to be removed from the normal page, it used to be there too I think, it might have something to do with this version missing the VPN features, that seem to be in windows 11 24h2 version of Microsoft edge browser.

my question is there another official website link for the rpm that might include the vpn feature for using the web browser in linux? I think its a beta feature since its very new and I think it was added to browser essentials under the windows build version at some point, I normally don’t turn it on, since some websites don’t like it, for example if you wanted to download an windows 11 iso image, the VPN feature will cause their own iso image download links to fail.

That is something to ask from Microsoft.

Do you specifically need Microsoft Edge for something?

not, sure why but the VPN just started working, I think it has to do with the second time after closing the microsoft edge browser and reopening it, asked me for the kde wallet password, and it show up, in the browser, I was able to enable it in this linux distro, also under internet its showing edge twice in it, but the kde menu editor only shows edge once under it, so I am not sure what’s going on there.

inffy, that is not the fix or a solution, it seems to be working now, but the launcher is showing it twice, maybe a bug? I already repied to this, and yes I use edge for access to bing points and searches both under windows and linux, I use also a series x console for my other video games, that are not pc based. I will mark mine is a solution if needed since VPN is working, you wrote to ask microsoft and that’s not a fix for it just showing up, I think it had something to do with the second time again kde wallet asked for my wifi password access, like what you create with kgpg when it asks that under affects plasma kde, and not gnome based distros.

yes, I use it with my outlook accounts, and bing searchs for points, for xbox gift cards for my series x console at home, also it stores my bookmarks from my windows accounts.

Well the RPM comes from MS, so there is pretty much nothing we can do about it if it has features or not. afaik the linux version is always little bit behind the windows version.

And if you use the flatpak, that is unofficial but I guess its built from the official app (haven’t really looked into it that much)

is it safe to disable kde wallet under linux or is it really needed, since each time a browser is launched it asks for my password, which was created when KGpg when you connect to your home wifi it asks for you to create if using that two different passwords, I know for a fact that gnome desktop doesn’t do this, but for some reason the kde one does? when you launch say edge in gnome it doesn’t ask you for a kde wallet passsword each time the software is ran, I have tried to disable it on kde plasma before, that doesn’t always work correctly I think.

is there some console commands that can be ran to fix that so each time the browser is run that it doesn’t ask you for your kde wallet password with the edge browser, I don’t recall but I think google chrome does the same thing.

I used the rpm and not the flatpak version of microsoft edge.

oof, that really sucks.

Yes, it appears to be a similar reason why you cannot import Xbox app games into Steam, nor can import Epic Games intro steam as steam games, works as non-steam games but I haven’t tested that much yet under linux, I have did the non-steam epic games under steam in windows before that works, but linux might be work or not for some of the titles, which do work under Lutris. I like Lutris, but I haven’t fully tested it yet to see all my games work under it. I plan to use GOG Galaxy for it or GOG app on Flathub, going to try that app too, in time.

I reason to keep my newer desktop on windows is for the xbox app games, like fallout 76 game from windows that was free with amazon prime gaming, but it’s locked into the Xbox app, as I do not think you can play it from steam or at least not the free access version.

I also like the life is strange series, for example the remaster versions are ok, but the newest title they released has some sort of DRM in it, but I only got the disc for my console, so it may show up under Xbox app but its not playable from there as I don’t own that one digital, now the true colors life is strange game I do own digitally and got the remastered collection free with that pre order of that game, but for whatever reason the remastered collection was not cross compatible only the main true colors was in that release.

as for why I am doing the Bing points for redeeming stuff I guess I could go into google chrome or Firefox and do points that way too, but anyway I am working on unlocking lord of the rings movies, and the hobbit ones, since they have a good deal for them like 1500 points for each movie, which unlocks the 4k movies anywhere versions which I can watch on my oled 4k tv set at home, but yes it sucks that it takes so much time to unlock them doing daily searches, also mobile searches gives me 0 points of the 100 points since they don’t count android tablets 10.1 devices as mobile hardware, since when I use Bing app on my android tablet its giving me pc 150 points instead it’s been that way for a long time now. I am not sure about playing bazzite steam deck games on a oled tv set if that would work, or if its a good idea, I heard some older oled tv’s had some problems with oled but since its a newer model, I don’t think its affect by the same ghosting problems, like logo and stuff were once bad for oled based tv sets. tv set is lg oled 4k c4 model of tv which I use for my series x console and ps4 at home, and smart apps for watching movies on it too.

which is why I do need to keep my newer pc on windows 11, the cross platform game access with my series x is about the only reason to keep using windows 11, as I don’t care for the phone access apps that windows 11 now comes with, as I don’t own any android phones just my android tablet which is a wifi device only.

other apps in xbox app that are some of them cross platform games.

settings → kde wallet → wallet preferences → uncheck everything related to close behaviour. If you have automatic login then kdewallet needs a password on boot. If you don’t then it should automatically unlock. You can also check settings → kde wallet → access control → checkmark prompt when an application accesses a wallet → click arrow next to kwallet to show apps → for microsoft edge → always allow (I don’t know how to change it but you can see what settings you have for each application, at first time you get a popup about it, so maybe u can delete it for edge and then click always allow next time?).

thanks for that info,

I am not sure if KDE Wallet shows up under settings or not. Some Linux distributions it enabled but do not include the GUI interface for it in the packages. It is strange, but I recall that some versions of Plasma KDE do not have KDE Wallet under settings. Next time I boot into Plasma KDE, I will look into its settings. The fact that GNOME does not have anything like KDE Wallet makes me wonder why it is even needed in the OS itself. I am not sure if all home users like KDE Wallet. I may switch back to bazzite Steam Deck GNOME NVidia version over time, as there are some features in GNOME that seem to work better than KDE on my older PC. It feels a bit faster switching to the GNOME desktop than the KDE desktop on that Gigabyte desktop from steam deck gaming mode, which again feels like when it goes to the gnome desktop it loads it a bit faster than plasma kde of the other version, I think solus linux distro modified their version of kde plasma to load faster but again it cut features out of kde plasma to make it load faster, or at least last time I tried it that’s what it felt like they did to their version of it. I am not sure why. I do not always like GNOME desktop, but it can be configured with Dash to look like Windows, similar to how KDE Plasma is set up by default. However, it does require customizing the GNOME desktop which can be done, as I have done it before with Dash and its app settings under GNOME. Also, for whatever reason, it seems like apps launch faster under GNOME; at least it feels like they do on a desktop PC.
