ROG Ally X will no longer connect to 5ghz network (full troubleshooting steps taken outlined in topic)

Device: ROG Ally X
Image: bazzite-deck: stable
OS Update Channel: Stable
Steam Client Update Channel: Stable
System Image: 42.20250901.1
Dual boot with Windows (I’ve confirmed fast boot is off, hibernate is disabled)

Description of the problem:

The issue began out of nowhere last week, but I hadn’t made any changes in how I used the device.

The Ally X will attempt to connect for about thirty seconds and then seemingly times out either stating the password is incorrect or just stating it can’t connect to the network.

No matter how many times I re-enter the password, the issue persists.

Rebooting the device does not consistently resolve the problem, though sometimes if I leave it powered on for a few minutes (five to ten) it may connect to the network on its own.

The ROG Ally X on Bazzite is the only device in the house that has this problem.

Troubleshooting steps taken:

  • I’ve re-entered my password to no avail
  • Rebooted my router and modem
  • Tried changing the channel of my 5ghz from “automatic” to each of the channel options in the dropdown menu (router is a Linksys EA7450) including:
    • 36 - 5.180 GHz
    • 40 - 5.200 GHz
    • 44 - 5.220 GHz
    • 48 - 5.240 GHz
    • 149 - 5.745 GHz
    • 153 - 5.765 GHz
    • 157 - 5.785 GHz
    • 161 - 5.805 GHz
    • [165 - 5.825 GHz]
  • Enabled developer mode and turned off wifi power management
  • Forgot the network and tried connecting from scratch
  • Ensured “fast boot” is disabled in the bios
  • Windows partition: disabled hibernation
  • Windows partition: disconnected from wifi and performed a graceful shutdown
  • Desktop mode: disabled wifi power saving as outlined in the “issues and resolutions wi-fi is slow / wi-fi lag spikes” section of Issues & Resolutions - Bazzite Documentation under the wpa_supplicant (iwd is off) section of the guide
  • Set DNS to “8.8.8.8” as advised by a user post I found saying this helped them

The problem went away for about two days and suddenly this morning it’s come back. While I’ve seen a handful of posts on reddit saying the steps I took above resolved the issue for the users, the majority I’ve seen are inconclusive.

The only common thread I’ve found is that the user isn’t sure why the problem occurred; it just seems to happen out of the blue for some people.

Any further advice would be greatly appreciated, I’ve tried everything I can think of at this point. And, if there is any additional information that may be helpful to provide please let me know and I’ll be happy to do so, thank you!

I did some googling and it seems that the Linux wifi driver for your chipset is buggy and known to have issues. You might want to move to an alternate wifi adapter (either card or USB).

Thank you, I’ll take a look and see what options I’ve got. I don’t know that there are any DIY solutions to replace the card in the Ally X, but a USB option might work.

It’s super weird, my Ally X on Bazzite was able to access the 5GHz network just fine for half a year now and out of the blue this problem occurred. I’ve seen the same story from other affected users; some have said wiping and reinstalling Bazzite worked for a little while, but eventually the problem came back for them.

Hi,

This is a user to user forum so developers don’t personally check bug reports here. If you go to their GitHub page and start a ticket, I’m sure they will look into it.
