Is Bluefin secure enough to be run as a Cloud Desktop? I am looking to find a hosting solution that I can install Bluefin-dx workstation to have my desktop remote. 1. Is Bluefin secure enough for this use-case and 2. any suggestions on a hosting company that would allow a Bluefin-dx install? Any responses would be greatly appreciated
When I first heard “Cloud Native” desktop I was pretty confused. I understood that Blufin desktop is run in the cloud. But actually Cloud Native means desktop is build with the same technologies that cloud server word is built on, like OCI images on system level, flatpak OCI-images on end-user level, Distrobox OCI containers also on end-user level, Homebrew OCI containers also on end-user level. But… Universal Blue desktops (Blufin, Aurora, etc) are desktop software you run on your desktop or laptops, just like any other Linux distribution or Windows or MacOS.
Probably Universal Blue official web page better explains what Cloud Native really is if you are into a details.
You can run Blufin or Blufin-dx (or any other from Universal Blue) as cloud desktop, so having desktop installed on cloud and used remote desktop tool to access it, but I wonder why would you want that. Any details would help a lot.
Is Blufin secure enough? This is pretty difficult question. Simplest answer is, it depends. It depends what is you a threat model. I assume because of you wanting to have desktop run on cloud I assume your threat model is not extremely high, in this case Blufin is at least as secure as any other Linux distribution if not more, because of read-only nature of system programs (immutability, atomicity,…). Also any detail about your thread model would help a lot - who you want to protect your desktop from?
Probably some web search can provide info on hosting desktop on cloud. Still I don’t understand what you want to achieve. Maybe all you need is Blufin-dx on your laptop and have some cloud backup of your local files or something. Any detail would help a lot so I (and probably others, because nobody has replied to this thread yet) can understand what is your intention.
