How to create a Surface image in 2026?

Need some guidance re. Surface devices.

They became EOS in 2023 acc. to https://github.com/orgs/ublue-os/packages?tab=packages&q=surface with a referral to https://github.com/ublue-os/hwe which was archived April 2025 on this note:

Surface images were never built for F41. Nvidia images will likely be moved to Main. Note, at this time we are not deprecating Surface or Asus kernel caching or akmods building.

I’m unable to parse the last part re. kernel caching or akmods.

Please clarify whether it’s possible to build a current ublue image with the https://github.com/linux-surface kernel, thanks.

I’m using Surface Book 2 with GTX 1060, the Nvidia 580 (CUDA 13) driver is running fine on CachyOS. Not sure whether it’s https://wiki.archlinux.org/title/NVIDIA_Optimus compatible and haven’t tried any methods yet.

Side note to acknowledge the rather bizarro scenario twisting MS hardware towards a bleeding edge Linux platform. I went looking for refurbished/used 2-in-1 dGPU laptops without mediocre 16:9 displays and couldn’t find anything else (quest log Linux laptop, touchscreen, 3:2 - Hardware - discuss.pixls.us ).

*at second glance there’s a 2025 bluefin-surface-nvidia-open image - https://github.com/ublue-os/bluefin/pkgs/container/bluefin-surface-nvidia-open. It’s untagged for 7 months now, does that imply EOS as well?

Seems I’m the third to inquire within the last 18 months, if there’s an answer it’s unfortunately not given there:
