Deprecation Notice for Base Asus and Surface Images

After a few years of building base hardware enablement images for surface and asus, we are deprecating the building of them in Fedora 42. However, these images are no longer used as a base for any Universal Blue image and have had little maintenance during the F41 cycle to the point that surface images were never built for F41.

This means universal-blue will no longer build images such as silverblue-asus and silverblue-surface. Currently, we are building F41 asus images and F40 surface images. When F42 releases, asus and surface images will no be built in the HWE repo.

At this time, there is no plan to stop caching the asus and surface kernels along with the akmods building meaning you are able to build your own image.

Bluefin and Aurora have already moved all HWE images to use the Bazzite Kernel.

FWIW, I personally become aware of this ‘deprecation’ from the chats in December and reforged my Surface device.

The device works as expected. Thanks!

What does this mean for ASUS and Surface laptops?
Are they now less supported or is it fine because of the Bazzite kernel works really well?

If you are using the base Asus or Surface images, we will no longer be building them. We have never built a surface F41 image (silverblue-surface:41 does not exist).

These images are not used when building any Bluefin, Aurora, or Bazzite image.

This primarily affects those who build a custom image from these images.
