How does one get an application running on startup?

Hi! Sorry if this seems a bit of a stupid question.

I’ve been looking for a bit and it’s now 2am, so, I would hope that you all would be able to provide a good answer! I give my appreciations in advance.

Anyways, I would like to run a VPN software, specifically, ProtonVPN, on startup. Why? Because, I quite like having it active the moment my system starts running, and it helps remind me to activate it before I use it. It’s already installed, working perfectly, I just can’t figure out how to get it running on startup.

If any of you could give a solution, that’d be great! I’ve tried using the terminal, the console, but, all sources seem to be either for Ubuntu, or use depreciated methods.

Again, thanks in advance to whoever wouldn’t mind helping a tired moth out!

Thanks!!

You could install Ignition (likely installed by default). It lists existing autostart entries and allows to create new ones easily using a beautiful GUI.

You could also simply add a .desktop file of your program to ~/.config/autostart.

Look for autostart in the start menu and add it there.

If you’re using the KDE Plasma version of Bazzite, go to the System Settings app, and at the very bottom in the System section there is a category for Autostart. You can add whatever apps you want to autostart there.

If you’re using GNOME, the only way I know of is to install gnome-tweaks if it isn’t installed already and add startup programs from there.
