Consistent KWin crashes after stable-20250309.1 upgrade

Hi:

I upgraded my system from stable-20250224.6 to stable-20250309.1 today and noticed that KWin would constant crash and restart in certain actions.

So far I have identified the following actions would always trigger a KWin crash:

  1. Open any Chromium based apps (Brave, Discord, Chromium browser…etc)
  2. Click “About this System” in System settings app

When KWin is crashed, the desktop would become black for a while and eventually restart with a KWin crash report window:

And the apps I tried to open will be closed.

I noticed KDE is upgraded to 6.3.2-1 in this tag, but didn’t find any similar report when googling KDE 6.3.2 topics, so I’m not sure if this is a specific problem related to Aurora image?

My system info

Operating System: Aurora 41
KDE Plasma Version: 6.3.2
KDE Frameworks Version: 6.11.0
Qt Version: 6.8.2
Kernel Version: 6.13.5-200.fc41.x86_64 (64-bit)
Graphics Platform: Wayland
Processors: 16 × AMD Ryzen 7 7840HS w/ Radeon 780M Graphics
Memory: 58.7 GiB of RAM
Graphics Processor: AMD Radeon 780M
Manufacturer: Framework
Product Name: Laptop 16 (AMD Ryzen 7040 Series)
System Version: AG

Other notes:

  1. I’m using Aurora DX
  2. I booted back to previous stable-20250224.6 tag and confirmed this issue doesn’t occur in that tag
  3. logs from “Developer information” in KWin crash report window
  4. Manually upgraded to 20250302 and confirmed no such issue in that tag as well.

Thanks.

Unfortunately this is a known issue with the newest kwin. This was confirmed on a Frameworks forum by a Fedora packaging team member that kde included a patch in the newest kwin package that broke it.

There should be a fixed version coming today(ish). I think we can push a new stable release also after it has landed to fix it.
