Can't update from bluefin gts-42.20260106 upwards (Bug: kernel NULL pointer dereference)

Hi there,

I have a problem updating my bluefin gts installation from gts-42.20260106 upwards. If I do install newer versions (either trough automatic updates or rebasing from terminal) the system ends up being stuck in the boot process with the little dino and the loading circle loading forever. If I press ESC to see the commands I get the error messages attached in the photos. I get the errors

Bug: kernel NULL pointer dereference, address 0000000000000000
PF: supervisor instruction fetch in kernel mode
PF: error_code(0x0010) - not-present page

I tried removing the layered packages, but that doesnโ€™t change a thing. Is it something related to my AMD graphics card?

Can anyone help me troubleshooting this? How can I resolve the problem and update?

Thank you

I have a problem updating my bluefin gts installation from gts-42.20260106 upwards

If I remember correctly. There is no gts bluefin now.

You should try rebasing to bluefin stable

Thank you for your reply @rzeczyspisane. Bluefin GTS is still active until the beginning of march and you can rebase to any release as the rebase-helper shows:

โฏ ujust rebase-helper

  gts-20251209
  gts-20251204

gts-42.20260106 is the last one that works for me. After that something must have changed on the side of Bluefin, because my machine hasnโ€™t.

I also tried rebasing to Bluefin Stable, but the error remains and I canโ€™t boot.

Any other ideas?

I tried some more versions with the following results: newest stable and stable-daily produces errors and I canโ€™t boot on my system. But the newest version of latest (latest-43.20260131.1) just works fine without errors :open_mouth: I can only guess that there are things broken from gts-42.20260106 upwards that are solved in newer/newest version of Bluefin 43. So I will probably wait until these latest versions have reached the stable branch and then stay there. Not ideal, but pragmatic :man_shrugging:

GTS will soon go away anyway (in March propably) so doesnโ€™t really matter.

Well, it does matter if I canโ€™t update/rebase to any other version/branch until then, preferably a gts equivalent or stable. latest is too hot for me. Then Iโ€™m stuck on gts-42.20260106 forever or what happens to outdated versions of gts @inffy?

I am having the same problem with installing on a friends desktop computer

It will not boot into the new image just the install image

There has been two images since install

I canโ€™t remember all the PC specs

But I think it was a i3 maybe i5 with amd gpu

The SSD is installed on a pcie card

This was the stable Bluefin image

@Cowboy Thanks for your reply. Do you get a similar error like I posted above? You can see it if you press the ESC key during the boot process.

I also suspect a similar problem within this thread: https://universal-blue.discourse.group/t/freeze-at-boot/11556 as the author has a similar boot problem after updating from a 43.20260106 release, but with the Aurora image.

@FutureNeeds Yes it is the exact same error

I did start a thread on the Bluefin discussion

Okay, good to know. I will keep an eye on the Github discussion as well. But I guess, you need to post some system information in that Github thread as @j0rge pointed out, so they can help you/us. You can get this with the following commands: rpm-ostree status, bootc status for info on your deployments and fastfetch for info on your system.

As said, correct place for the discussion is in the Bluefin discussion
