Hi! I’ve been gradually moving from Windows to Bazzite, and almost everything is working fantastically! So happy to finally move to Linux.
I have run into a small number of issues. Currently, I’m trying to figure out why Bazzite/Grub doesn’t load what seems like every other boot.
The error happens something like this: I power on the computer, it posts, then a black screen. I’ve tried a number of key combinations, but it seems like the only way to escape is to force power down the computer. Usually, the next boot does load grub, successfully loading Bazzite a few seconds after. I think this is grub not loading, causing Bazzite to never be loaded.
However, I’m not 100% sure if it’s grub not loading. Occasionally, grub successfully loads and proceeds to load Bazzite, only for a (seemingly) identical black screen issue to occur. Though, I configured grub to wait a few seconds, with it still resulting in a black screen, potentially indicating that it is grub not loading. Note: When grub does successfully load, it waits the configured time as intended.
Also, Journalctl doesn’t seem to contain any logs when this issue happens. Using --boot=-1 only contains logs of the last successful boot.
I’m not really sure where to go from here. Any and all ideas are appreciated- thank you for reading!
Does it happen more when you reboot, or equally often when you power down and cold boot?
I don’t remember it ever happening when rebooting, I think it only happens when cold booting.
Have you tried giving it time to boot? Might sound crazy, but I have had moments like you anxiously waiting for it to boot. Give it time to do update processes, and you boot properly.
My rig takes 30+ seconds to post (lots of HD, NVMe, and ram), then 30 seconds to boot.
If I change hardware, it can take longer to post.
So, yeah, I’d give it some time.
I didn’t think of it just taking awhile to load as a possibility! I’ll power it up and leave it over night to see what happens. Hopefully it will save some logs and go into sleep mode.
Unfortunately, no luck. Turned the monitor on to see a black screen. As a silver lining, I noticed a few things: All the peripherals were off. Also, the disc activity indicator wasn’t flickering at all. Even more interestingly, when I powered the computer off and back on, instead of just booting into Bazzite like described before, I got another black screen. I wonder why the error happened twice in a row this time.
I would try disabling sleep mode.
Shouldn’t affect a cold boot, but…
Disabled sleep mode, fully powered down computer and attempted to cold boot, sadly the issue persists.
Noticed some more patterns. If I boot into grub via the UEFI settings, the system boots without issue every time.
Also, there is a duplicate boot option of Fedora in the UEFI settings, but selecting it still causes the system to boot as normal. I don’t think it’s a kernel backup since the duplicate has the same name as the original, the only difference being that its name is formatted a little strangely (extra newline), but not 100% on this.
One final thing, in grub itself, there are duplicates of both the current kernel and backup kernel. Choosing the duplicates causes an error to be displayed on the screen (something along the lines of unknown command), but I am able to escape back to grub. Selecting the working Fedora entry leads to Bazzite booting normally.
Interesting.
I don’t have any ideas.
I have a strange thing with my rig, sometimes Gnome is extremely sluggish after booting, especially if I warm boot. Powering down and rebooting once or twice fixes it. I think it’s because I have both an Intel and an Nvidia GPU, but I’m not sure. It isn’t a bluefin problem, crickets on the Gnome forum.
Anyway, hope you get it worked out!
