On windows I use ZeroTier, which is a VPN designed for gaming, it has no proxy server element. I have discovered that there is a linux version but it tells me to go away because it doesn’t recognise Bazzite, there is a git hub version but I have no idea how to proceed after downloading it, using make I get a “OpenTelemetry exporter not enabled, skipping build” error and I am not sure how to proceed.

Try TailScale. Works fantastic on Bluefin and should behave exactly the same on Bazzite. They increased the free version to 100 nodes. Same or even more features than ZeroTier.
I currently use Tailscale, but ZeroTier has some unique advantages, particularly its Layer 2 Ethernet operation, which makes broadcast and autodiscovery significantly easier than with WireGuard-based solutions like Tailscale.

Hi Folks, thanks for the reply, I did manage to install Zerotier, I found this post on Reddit
