Please help troubleshoot random hard freezes and system service failures

Issue description: my bazzite (gnome) system, which runs on my desktop PC that I’d purchased only recently, occasionally hard freezes during random (often mundane and not resource intensive tasks), and requires hard reboot.

I’ve also encountered cases, where gnome remains responsive, but a number of system services stop working (can’t open new apps, most existing ones are unresponsive and also while the terminal works, I can’t use sudo and therefore can’t restart them).

EDITED: the thread I was referencing in regards to 9070xt issues being mesa related was talking about mesa 25.0.5, not 25.1.5 as I mistakenly remembered. Therefore it would seem the issues must be related to something else.

I’ve read through journalctl -b -1, but other than a shocking amount (multiple dozen) of network errors, I haven’t actually experienced any network connectivity issues while using the system. However, I do have an issue with the wireless module on my motherboard, with the system occasionally detecting and connecting to the wifi, while other times it behaves as if it didn’t even exist. The desktop is connected to my router through ethernet cable.

I haven’t seen much that could explain the issues I’d ran into, and all the kernel and system message events and errors occur long before the freeze/hangup happens (I mean tens of minutes, or even hours), with the last message being the brave ssl error (including relevant parts of the log):

The two segfaults did not cause a crash (the system kept running for a good while longer), and some other logs also contain steam ld.so (ld_preload) errors, and split lock detection errors.

Any ideas on how to proceed with troubleshooting/fixing the issue please?

Having similar freezes

@stevensko I’d managed to somewhat alleviate the problem by disabling the iGPU in bios. The freeze seems to be an issue that occurs when the driver is switching between GPUs, so since I disabled the iGPU, I haven’t run into this particular problem.

I have the iGPU disabled too, but it’s also related to the power management that causes issues with the GPU drivers (AMD in my case). So I’ve disabled the power management too…
Even then, the problem is still there.
It happens quite often, several times a day even when I’m doing nothing with the system.

I tried switching to CachyOS and my screen will crash to black when the login prompt showes.
So I put this in the boot part of the kernel settings
amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x6410 amdgpu.cwsr_enable=0

It did let me get through the login screen. However, I’m not sure it still will randomly crash to desktop after a few hours.
But may that setting will help you.
This is the system I have slightly older cpu than yours but also uses the igpu:

This way it doesn’t disable the igpu but makes it slower to enable its enhance graphics processing. Atleast that was what chatgpt told me. Not sure if it will help you.

I will check that out, thanks.

Well, that didn’t change anything for me.
So now, I have the power management disabled, the hardware acceleration in Mozilla disabled, and a few other tricks from the internet, but when I leave the system, and come back, the screen is black and I’m forced to do a hard-reset. Sometimes, it happens when I’m surfing the internet too: everything stops responding (mouse/KB) and same thing: hard-reset.

It’s really annoying: the system isn’t stable at all.
When I started with Bazzite 6 months ago, it was working great, but now, it becomes more unstable than Windows 11.

Games, even AAA ones are working fine though, so go figure what’s going on.

I saw in a bootlog a lot of red lines regarding a PCIE configuration, but I coudn’t make sense of it.

Ok, I just started up my PC, and just when the desktop showed up, the system locked up already.
I’m completely done with Bazzite (was a huge fan).
I will try CachyOS instead, hoping for the best.

Good Luck. I went to CachyOS because I wanted to install the MooMoo app, but it was much more unstable. It kept crashing every couple of hours. Even booting had issues. Eventually I came back to Bazzite. For me the most stable configuration is:
amdgpu.dcdebugmask=0x6412
