Plasma stuck at black screen on logout/reboot/shutdown

I’m not sure if this is a bug or a configuration issue. It started in the past few weeks. When I exit Plasma - whether it’s to shutdown, reboot or log out - the screen goes black and there’s only a mouse cursor. It stays stuck like this indefinitely. I can shut down properly with “systemctl poweroff”, but Plasma or sddm seems to be getting stuck when I do it using the GUI. Using the command line from within Plasma also works. It’s specifically the “K → Shutdown|Restart|Log Out → OK” sequence that doesn’t work.

Some other important details:

  • I’m using the Bazzite nvidia image, but the issue is also in Aurora.
  • It only happens with an xorg session. Wayland doesn’t have this issue, although it has a number of other nvidia issues, which is why I’m stuck on xorg.
  • I’m not using hybrid graphics.

I tried early loading the nvidia drivers by adding the following to /etc/dracut.conf.d/nvidia.conf:
add_drivers+=" nvidia nvidia_modeset nvidia_uvm nvidia_drm "

Any ideas?

Thank you!

Recently KDE introduced “Adaptive sync” in display settings if it detects support for it with a monitor.
It might help to try and set this to “Never” if you have the setting. I had an issue with black screen whenever I started a game and this solved it for me. Maybe worth a shot.

Thanks for the reply. I don’t see any option for adaptive sync.

From what I’ve seen it is normal that the option sometimes just is not presented. I think Plasma only offers it if a compatible display device is detected.

This issue seems to have resolved itself after updating to Plasma 6.1.
