JayzTwoCents: I FINALLY listened to you and tried Linux... Why did I wait so long?

11/10. Bazzite knocked it out of the park here. Also really like how Jay covered it so thoughtfully for any users who may be intimidated by Linux (like I was!).

Watching him struggle with OBS was so painful. Thankfully that can be made way easier: Directly support flatpakref · Issue #121 · kolunmi/bazaar · GitHub

Then all “install from flathub” buttons on the internet will Just Work.

Yeah! My first thought was “whyyyy no no no”, but then I’ve realized that’s what Windows expats will probably want to do and it all made sense.

Really liked the video, 215k views so far at 10 hours post release!

Yeah, we are used to installing things from the company’s own page. The Windows Store has been around for a while now but almost always forgot it existed.

I must admit though, out of all the YouTubers making a “trying Linux” video, I think this one was the best.

I am SO glad they didn’t just pick SteamOS and then told people they need to change their hardware to game on Linux as a result… they did their research on this one.

Here’s another one …

I think it’s important for users to get a clear, in-your-face message that shows:

  • You download apps from here
  • You update your system manually from here
  • You open the system settings from here

There should be arrows that literally point to the pinned apps on the taskbar.

An overlay like the Steam UI uses in its onboarding tutorial on first startup would be simple, fast, and very effective. Would something like that be possible to integrate into Bazzite’s current tutorial window?

Regarding OBS, he was lucky they have an official Flatpak, in my opinion. Many apps that don’t officially build a Flatpak won’t list it on their website, and for those, users might think the app doesn’t exist, even though it’s available on Flathub!

Other than that, I loved the video and the coverage! Nothing says “critical mass accumulated” better than that!

This was the reason I switched over lol. Looked too good to be true, so I just had to try it for myself. There were a few things not covered that in-depth like xarishark mentioned above, but they were still pretty easy to figure out with a bit of exploration. I especially love how seamless the transition has really been, and the OS itself even seems more responsive though that’s likely just from the fresh install.

Welcome to the fold!

I think the hardest part for non-Linux users to get used to at first will be to install applications from .deb actually using something such as the DistroShelf so you can have latest version apps if they are not in Flathub. Looks like some developers are having a hard time making their ports available and is mostly contributors.

I’ve been dropping posts on Jayz videos for some time now telling them to try Bazzite, and a few others that went down the path of trying actual SteamOS and complaining about the poor user experience and hardware support, it was good to see he had a positive experience.

Jay just dropped another video on Bazzite if anyone is interested: https://youtu.be/Bute69Oj87I

Yeah as I said already the BTRFS bug is really messing with people. We need an actual guide to take care of this problem. I know 4 people personally that have gotten this. Really bad.

I don’t think that is the btrfs bug. There was suspicion that it’s an “old” rpm-ostree bug. It’s really rare and hasn’t been able to be reproduced consistently.

Either way we’re following up with the bootc team. Some days the raptor gets ya.

Looking forward to seeing how gets resolved for JayzTwoCents. It seems like linux is now in the very early adoptor phase of the diffusion of innovations. We’re at that point were gatekeeper influencers are taking linux out for a spin.

This phase of diffusion is going to be crucial for the future of linux and bazzite. Good buzz and quickly helping influencers resolve issues is essential. It’s rare to get a second chance to make a first impression.

Its good see someone like Jay taking Linux gaming for a spin, it even got him using an AMD card as well, as he is a real nVidia shill, its funny to watch him make all the same mistakes a lot of us went through many years ago.

We will all see more of these types try Linux now, its going to have a Domino effect, specially with the sunset of Windows 10.

Something I learnt way back in the early days of Linux, was never dual boot on the same disk, yes it works, but it never ends well, Windows seems to break the boot system randomly, and this was before the EFI system, its even more complicated now, if I have to run a dual boot system, then I go with a 3 disk system, 2 x low capacity drives, one for each OS, and one large drive for all of my data, games and software, then just use the BIOS boot selector instead.

I use these PCI-E to NVME add in cards to do this, so I can just swap them out quickly to try different operating systems, using these cards is extremely handy, takes less then 30 seconds to swap them out: UGREEN NVMe Adapter, M.2 SSD to PCIe 4.0 X16/X8/X4 Card with Heat Sink, Support M-Key and M&B-Key in Size 2280/2260/2242/2230 : Amazon.com.au: Computers
