Installing bluefin on virtualbox VM

Hello

I installed Bluefin on a virtualbox VM, on a windows host. It seems, it runs ok for now, but I wonder whether i will run into issues when there is an image upgrade or i start working with podman/distrobox when developing.

In the docs, it says it is not supported, that is why i am concerned.

Hyper-v might be a better approach but currently i am also working on an ubuntu VM and i believe both hyperv and virtualbox cannot be run concurrently.

Thanks

Hi @red11

in following message, it seems that there is no issue when upgrading a bluefin on virtualbox vm, right?

Sorry for kind-of-duplicate messages, but as said, the docs says “unsupported“ though from what i understand from following message, it seems to be ok?

I have been running Blufin in VirtualBox like a year. Now I have Blufin installed on physical laptop for like 6 months without an issue.

It may be that virtual machine is not OFFICIALLY supported, because there is small team to maintain it.

What I did is, make regular VirtualBox snapshot of last state of virtual machine, specially when I experimented something that I did not understand good enough to repair. You can also create snapshot if you think you will be doing something untested.

Blufin concept is to not install software on system level (like layering), but instead run it separately (flatpak, podman, brew), if this is done as recommended then Blufin will be very stable.

Thank you for your message.

Since my message, i have been using Bluefin on a virtualbox vm, up to now have not encountered something irrecoverable.

I understand Bluefin is not meant for this, though, for the time being, i need to hang on this. But in a short time, I am planning to boot Bluefin to an old macbook pro (2014), but thoughtful about 8 Gb RAM. Anyway..

best wishes
