I want to try out Bazzite on my Ryzen 7 5700X and RTX 4070 system, just because I want to try out an immutable Linux distro myself.
Unfortunately, I don’t have a free storage on any of my internal SSDs, so I have to use an external one. I have 120 GB SATA-based external SSD and an SSD-based 256 GB Kingston DataTraveler Max USB flash drive.
Is it possible to install Bazzite on an external SSD and boot from it? Or does the installer/bootloader have an hard check that blocks booting from external drives?
While I haven’t tried it myself, I don’t see why this wouldn’t work as a lot of people run other distros on USB or External Drives without issues.
it is possible but not a way we recommend to use the system and we will not provide support for it since you introduce more potential issues to the chain: usb bandwidth, usb controller throughput, etc where the solution would be to just don’t.
However if you just need it to just test and move the ssd into the system at a later point, go ahead it will work good enough for that.
