I assume laptop users must enter their password to resume work, as I do on my desktop? If so, that works be a good time to give notice that an update is pending. No changes to the users environment after entering their password. Surely no one not many would complain about a notice on the password…

Same thing I always say, engage with the projects that make the stuff. If you want graphical applications talk to GNOME or GNOME app developers who know how to make that stuff.
