Dual-boot: how to proceed when Windows kills grub?

Hello all.

I’ve been using Bluefin with dual-boot for the past few months and this weekend Windows updated, broke grub, and I couldn’t boot into Bluefin anymore (not even through BIOS).

I tried to follow some tutorials on how to fix grub. They usually amounted to booting into a live usb, mounting the Linux system and running grub-install. I am familiar with regular Linux distros, but Fedora, Bluefin and the whole immutable thing are all new to me. That said, I couldn’t follow the tutorials due to different file structures and just backed up /home and reinstalled the system.

I know dual-booting isn’t supported, but if anyone knows and would like to share, how should I proceed when facing this issue again in the future?

Thanks in advance.

It’s best to install Linux on a different physical drive than Windows when dual booting. Just for future reference.

Agreed with what @harold said, but I would also unplug the physical drive with Windows when installing Linux. After installing then plug the Windows physical drive back in. Then set the Boot order in the UEFI/BIOS to whichever one you use the most.

Just for reference if you do install Linux on a separate disk WITH the Windows physical drive plugged in, you may erase Windows Boot Loader.
