Better audio

I’m using Bluefin on several Macbooks and I notice a stark decrease in audio quality using Bluefin. Trying to read up on it I found Beginners Guide for Better Audio Quality in Linux and while I guess that the gist of the guide is applicable to Bluefin I don’t think it’s written with an immutable OS in mind.

What can I do to change resample method to, say, speex-float-10 in Bluefin?

This doesn’t have anything to do with “immutable OS”, that’s not a thing.

The commands in that post should work but we’re using pipewire, so you’re likely looking for how to tweak that setting in a pipewire config.

EDIT: this seems like a good place to start: Making sure you're not a bot!

I really wish that term would die a quick death. It has become so overloaded it has lost its meaning … sigh.

Universal Blue products (or any others based on ostree) are NOT immutable.

Did You Know? How ostree update merges changes into etc and var

I should probably change the title of that article to “Why Bluefin is NOT immutable”.

But I digress…

Thank you for pointing me in the right direction @j0rge! I found 14 instances of pipewire.conf on my system but only 2 ones in /usr so that’s where I’ll experiment next.

Finding out none of

/usr/lib/sysusers.d/pipewire.conf
/usr/share/pipewire/pipewire.conf

weren’t writable so I tried with

/var/home/user/.local/share/containers/storage/overlay/587d14669980688b7978f1811b71b9e19f200014698832486edd3cea5f48b401/diff/usr/share/pipewire/pipewire.conf

which had no mention of resampling quality. While poking around in that directory I also found pipewire-pulse.conf which does mention:

    #resample.quality = 4

implying the default setting of resampling quality is 4. If the range of quality settings is the same as the ones in the aforementioned blog post (1-10) it isn’t to shabby of a quality I guess.

I’ll try cranking this setting up to 7 but I don’t even know how Pipewire and PulseAudio interact with each other so it’s pure guessing at this point.

You likely want: /etc/pipewire/pipewire.conf :
