KDE users will find this to be the first stable release that returns Konsole. Ptyxis will remain on our KDE images for a short time to make it easier for users to transition any terminal configs they’ve made. This change is being done because Konsole will very soon have container support on-par with Ptyxis. If you enjoy Ptyxis and want to continue to use it, please install the Ptyxis flatpak from Bazaar after it’s removed.
Kontainer is now installed on new installs of our KDE images, replacing DistroShelf.
Latest version of Bazaar with a ton of great improvements.
All images are now 200MB smaller
For our next update we’ll be focusing on the new OGC kernel for desktop users. Handheld users will receive this kernel at a later date along with Input Plumber. We’ll also be giving our steering wheel drivers another pass and adding better support for elgato capture cards with that release.
Long term, we’re looking at a new rechunker that will enable us to ship even smaller updates (If you’re shipping a custom image this is something you’ll want to keep an eye on), switching over to SBOMs that will also power our changelogs, and breaking up our Containerfile into smaller scripts to make our contributors lives easier going forward.
Lastly I just want to give a huge thanks to our contributors, we’ve seen a huge jump in contributions and everyone new to the team has been an absolute joy to work with. We can’t thank you all enough!
Oh, that’s very nice. Any possibility of Discover returning? I mainly cared about it for keeping applets, themes, and the other KNewStuff thingies updated.
Been using Kontainer myself and I quite like it - it works well enough to list my distrobox and then export the apps out. Wish it could have an export binary menu though.
How will the plasma-login-manager transition is planned? I think that one still lacks a kcm module like sddm did, so no System Settings menu yet to set auto-login, change wallpaper, and sync settings between main desktop and the login manager.
As for InputPlumber… Having used it now for a while, it isn’t as big of a deal or issue as I thought it to be. I use ROG Ally - at first I missed the K&M emulation but SteamInput can handle that with Action Sets. I’ll have to look into SteamInputDB to see if I could share my configs so other ROG Ally users can have a smooth transition.
We try to use KDE equivalent applications where we can as long as the KDE application is as easy to use as the GNOME or non KDE variant and supports the same things (this also goes the other way if we had to use a KDE application in GNOME).
Primary goal is ease of use over being a GNOME/KDE flavored system when we are forced to decide
Last night, the 43.20260302 update was the latest stable version. This morning, there was 43.20260303. A cursory look at the change logs seems to show a lot of the same stuff listed as from the 02 update. Was there a problem with 02?
EDIT1: The changelog on the bazzite.gg page also has the following:
From previous stable version 43.20260217 there have been the following changes….
Odd that it runs from 43.20260217 instead of from 43.20260302. Is there some way to see what was changed from 02 to 03?
EDIT2: Also, I see “Replace Distroshelf with Kontainer on new KDE installs” in the changelog. As an existing KDE Distroshelf user, is there something I’m supposed to do to transition over to Kontainer?
You can just try it if you want or don’t, there is nothing really you have to migrate or anything.
If you are used to distroshelf and like it then there is no reason to switch.
I’m not wedded to Distroshelf. I’ve only got on Debian distro that I’m using to run Signal and it just sits there on it’s own. If Distroshelf and Kontainer can use each other’s “containers” without trouble, I guess I’ll give it a try. If I have to uninstall the Distroshelf one and re-install it in a Kontainer one, I’ll probably put it off for a bit.
I’m just assuming that Bazzite/Universal-Blue have some reason for switching and I should probably use what they’ve chosen (when possible).
They are both frontends to Distrobox. Everything in one shows up in the other. Distroshelf is a GTK4 application and Kontainer is a Kirigami(KDE) application. They both do more or less the same thing.
I have prefer Kontainer but that is just personal preference.
