What's the relationship between rpm-ostree and bootc

Hi y’all,

I’m getting started on my Universal Blue journey and I’m trying to understand the role of some of the main components of the system to which I’m new to, like rpm-ostree (and ostree in general), bootc or ujust.

In rpm-ostree documentation, they say that

NOTE: Currently, development focus has shifted to bootc, dnf, and the ecosystem around those tools. However, rpm-ostree is widely in use today in many upstream projects and downstream products and continues to be supported. In general, new major features related to bootable containers should land in those projects instead.

Does this mean that rpm-ostree functionnalities will later be integrated into the aforementioned tools ?

In general yes, but not all might be moved over. But its still developing all the time.

Its a real deep hole to fall into (trying to understand what was and what is and where it’s going). Very interesting though.

The main devs seem to hang out here Issues · Fedora / bootc / Issue Tracker · GitLab I’ve learned a lot by reading their discussions. This roadmap regarding Fedora bootc containers is also interesting Roadmap to Fedora Bootable Containers · Issue #1726 · coreos/fedora-coreos-tracker · GitHub
