Strange wifi issue when transferring files over network

This is probably not an issue related to bluefin or fedora, and most likely just a general linux issue, but I was hoping someone could point me in the right direction.

So I have a problem when transferring large files, or large amounts of files, over the network to my home server through a nfs4 connection. When I am connected to the network over 5g it will cause my desktop to hang after a couple minutes, sometimes crashing the gnome desktop and halting the transfer. Sometimes it completes, but the desktop will freeze while it completes.

If I connect to the non 5g connection to force it to transfer at a slower rate, the desktop doesn’t freeze, but it will have the mouse will pause and hang every few seconds. It’s much more usable during the transfer but it’s still a problem.

This seems to be an issue with the motherboard wifi. Maybe transferring at a high rate (over 5g) is causing causing IO problems? Maybe it’s a bad driver? Maybe bluetooth is interfering?

This also happens under windows, fwiw, but the issue is not nearly as bad as on linux. And if the wifi antenna gets to close to the computer it can cause issues with bluetooth. This leads me to believe it’s an issue with onboard wifi being kind of bad.

Can anyone point me in the right direction on how to solve this? Or have you dealt with this issue and know what’s going on? Is it a problem with the kernel scheduler? Maybe recommend a linux compatible wifi card/usb dongle?

the motherboard is an Asus PRIME B550M-A (WI-FI)
the wifi is an intel Wi-Fi 6 AX200, which should be supported

Thanks for any help.

In the past, I’ve had a monitor block WiFi and Bluetooth signals, so, it might be something environmental.

If possible, you might try changing WiFi channels.

If it also happens in Windows, even to a lesser extent, then I wouldn’t think there would be much you could do about it on the Linux side.

I could be wrong, and frequently I am.

I have an antenna I can move around, so I don’t think it’s that. Interference between bluetooth and wifi has been a problem before, but I don’t think this is the cause.

It’s just that the faster files transfer over the network, the more the desktop hangs. At 5g moving a 10gig file will cause everything to freeze until the transfer is done. Sometimes crashing gnome and putting me back in the log in screen.

I guess I need to find a way to cap the transfer speed. I’ll look into changing wifi channels.

Thanks
