Stargazers #2 - Aurora August Update

Stargazers #2 - Aurora August Update

This is our second edition of our newsletter. This will be a slightly shorter one.

Bazaar now generally available

We have moved Bazaar to the main images from the beta stream. Bazaar features our new “AuroraVerse” artwork from @Chandeleer.

From now on, Bazaar will replace Discover and become the primary application frontend to discover and install applications on your machine.

This is now enabled in stable-daily and latest streams and will be coming to stable the coming weekend. If you are on the beta stream, we recommend you to rebase back to main images, as we are disabling the beta builds.

ujust rebase-helper will help you.

But I want my Discover back!

Yes, we heard you! Some users might still prefer to use Discover, so we are providing a ujust recipe to switch between the two.

Simply run ujust toggle-software-store and you will be able to switch back and forth between Discover and Bazaar. No rebooting necessary.

Can I have some dinosaurs with that?

If you want the Bluefin wallpapers on your Aurora machine, simply follow the guide linked below and let the dinosaurs invade your Aurora machine.

Find more info about it in the docs.

Updated rebase-helper utility

We also updated our rebase-helper utility. It will now allow you to select a stream and pin to a specific date on that stream. Before, if you rebased to a specific date, it would always bring you to that latest stream build.

ahhhhhhhhh, dinosaurs, AHHHHHHHHH!!

Thank you for this feature. Also looking forward to Bazaar next week.

Question, will the dino wallpapers transition between day and night time like I think they do in Bluefin? I thought that was something that Plasma didn’t support.

It does! We use this wallpaper plugin for that functionality.

I applaud you for respecting user choice and adding this great solution. Sadly the Bazzite team thinks this is bloat, but as a gamer, rebasing will have other downsides for my use case.

Thanks for the work on Bazaar, it’s clearly a solid project. That said, since Aurora is KDE-first, it feels a bit odd that the default software store is GTK-based. Qt apps generally integrate better with Plasma’s theming, shortcuts, and overall UX. Wouldn’t it make more sense to keep a Qt app (like Discover) as the default, and offer Bazaar as the optional toggle? That way the defaults match the desktop environment, while still giving choice to users who prefer Bazaar.

Will the application have the same name, whether you keep Bazaar or go for Discover? Or will the name change as well?

Thank you for providing choice and enabling those of us who prefer a, “purer”, KDE experience to keep using Discover. It’d be nice if Bazzite offered the same, but it is what it is.

The icon and name changes obviously since these are 2 different applications. It’s your choice.

I donated to the Bazaar project and appreciate it, but I also appreciate being given a choice.

I think that’s always the risk with opinionated distros, sometimes people have different opinions. But without the opinionated distros you wouldn’t be able to provide sane defaults + batteries.

Have been playing around with Aurora and I rather like it!

I was just asking because I remember one of the Bazaar threads here there was a discussion about a name change to something like Apps Store or whatever. Perhaps that was related to Bluefin only. I hope whatever happens it will be the same name across Bluefin, Aurora, Bazzite. Even if it just stays “Bazaar”.

I agree. I switched back to Discover as Bazaar is buggy and keeps freezing when trying to close it. I think I just like Discover more, seems more innate.

No your nvidia card and its drivers are buggy. Don’t blame the software for your hardware faults. And we already did a fix for the shitty Nvidia stuff.

Uhhmm, okay? Easy bro, not at the face please xD.

sorry but it irks me a lot when people complain that software is buggy but the reason is that nvidia decided to ship drivers that break GTK4 apps.
