whats crazy about this is after doing some brief looking, i found a provider that provides a flatpak:
Based on the packaging format - it would seem that this solution could not provide the protection that the user would expect. Seems like this is quite an alarming issue.
Interesting, seems apps can talk with NetworkManager and do changes like that. Still way more insecure than Android I guess.
from the flatpak manifest (the app is proprietary which is a shame)

upstream work is needed to have what mullvad does for all VPNs. And then it will make a lot more sense not to have a VPN app control all your network traffic
