Random Reboots, without the usual suspects

I only have one distrobox and I think I had the reboot problems before I made a distrobox, so I don’t know if they’re related to my reboot but they might be for yours.

the -1 parameter on journalctl is a count-backwards of current reboots. -0 is the current boot, -1 is the previous boot, -2 is the one before that, etc.

I’d be curious, if your Bazzite is kind enough to stay online for it, if you could walk back in your reboots and see if they’re always ended with distrobox stuff.

Mine is usually discord info spam about loaded resources not being used fast enough, I think.

I don’t even use distrobox at all personally. Anyways, it’s quite a bit longer this time (so long that it’s too long) but I did also shut it down completely and walked away frustrated for a little bit.

I also touched the power button more than once (maybe 2 or 3 times) while it was booting because I mistook the fan by the TV for one of the fans inside the PC and my Fractal Terra case does not have any LEDs to indicate power state lol so if that has anything to do with why it’s so long, my bad. I’m guessing not though because everything in that log happened within the “Jun 10 11:26:03” timestamp

Disclaimer I am not an advanced user (but also not a novice, I’d say I’m medium level), but I had been daily driving PopOS on my old laptop from 2019 until I upgraded last December to new hardware. Currently typing from my PopOS laptop. I’m not a distrohopper, I generally try to figure out the issues I’m having.

I was gonna post something about leaving for the store to come back and see if it had rebooted, but just as I turned back towards my laptop the desktop rebooted again. Hah. I’ve never seen anything like this before.

So, my guess is that those posted logs are a safe shutdown of some sort; lots of unmounting of filesystems and stuff, and my reboots don’t give time for that; the logs just suddenly end. So maybe it’s because the power button was pressed.

I was a Senior Linux Sysadmin in the past, but Linux has changed a lot since then (and distros have done some amazing stuff since then… and Bazzite-n-co are kinda special types of distros) so I might have enough information to get in trouble.

I just Distro hopped from Ubuntu to Bazzite, not because Ubuntu was giving me trouble but because Bazzite looked fun to learn. I can dual-boot to Ubuntu (see the kernels above) if necessary, but I just moved my life to Bazzite and don’t want to juggle two distros, so I’m invested to track this down.

I’m tempted to switch my Ubuntu install with a Kubuntu install, just so I’m on KDE on both distros to reduce differences (maybe there’s something in KDE causing the reboots; GNOME Ubuntu is solid as Gibraltar)… but at the same time, it’s nice to have a known good fallback until I can get Bazzite to stop misbehaving.

I can get my edition of this to happen consistently by having Baldur’s Gate Enhanced Edition open and running. Along with anything that might be using the video card, like a 3D printer slicer. Getting really frustrating and pretty sunken into Bazzite but really considering another OS at this point.

I have the same issue with a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16ARX8 laptop. I tried Bazzite for a few days, but had to settle to something else since it rebooted at least 20 times. Even web surfing led to spontaneous reboots!

This is rather strange, as I use Bazzite on two mini-PCs (AMD Ryzen 7 8845HS and 8745HS) and they are running top notch. Before trying Bazzite, I used Fedora Workstation on this laptop and everything was working correctly. That Fedora installation was scavenged from my previous laptop, and has been upgraded four times (from 37 to 41)!

Now, I gave a try to Bluefin DX on my Lenovo laptop… and everything is fine. Actually, I have been running it since late April and had no crashes or reboots. I am missing some useful packages and had to settle with the Steam flatpak though, hence why I am still looking forward for a working Bazzite installation.

It looks like there is a specific customization in Bazzite that does not work correctly with an AMD CPU and NVIDIA GPU combo. Did somebody had this issue with an Intel CPU?

If a dev is looking at this thread, just let me know and I’ll try to help. Atomic desktops is a rather new concept to me, but I have been using Fedora for a long while.

Good call on the AMD CPU/NVIDIA GPU combo, I don’t think I mentioned that. I, indeed, have an AMD CPU and an NVIDIA GPU, but even more exciting, my primary monitor runs through the AMD Integrated GPU, and my secondary monitor through the NVIDIA GPU.

This happened because I have an Apple Studio Monitor that will ONLY work over Thunderbolt. My motherboard supports porting video from the Dedicated GPU through the USB-C port dedicated to video.

I’m on Linux because Windows 11 has a bug, either in the display manager or in one of the GPU drivers, that causes the video subsystem to reset at random. I tried Ubuntu Linux, and it Just Worked on the Live CD.

I had to do some tweaking on GDM to make it Just Work on login on a real install, but it’s been a rock solid dream on Ubuntu since.

I have not booted into Bazzite in a few days, because I installed Kubuntu (my third distro on this hard drive) to see if maybe it’s something in the KDE stack that causes the problems. Except for a weird bug in the KDE lock screen on Kubuntu’s latest verision*, I have not had a problem or a reboot so far.

So, yeah, it’s gotta be something happening somewhere in Bazzite’s stack when the CPU and GPU are doing some graphical song and dance that’s beyond my kin. I just know it works in Ubuntu/Kubuntu, but causes graphics subsystem resets in Windows and random reboots in Bazzite.

Unfortunately, installing Kubuntu took over the GRUB menu and the Bazzite managed boot options are gone, so I’m not sure how to boot back into the Bazzite install that is still on my drive.

* It’s a super weird bug. The lock screen is frozen, but the mouse moves. The lock screen still accepts inputs like keystrokes and mouse clicks, but they don’t register unless I switch to a different TTY (ctl-alt-f3) then back, at which point the queued up inputs all go through at once. Not a problem to solve here, just something super weird with a super weird workaround found by accident.

I’m wondering if my problems are related to a 3rd party Discord app called Goofcord? I was able to leave the PC on overnight but when I opened Goofcord it rebooted within a few minutes. I should note that the app didn’t cause me any problems before, this is all recent. Ugh.

I haven’t been able to figure out what’s wrong otherwise. Feels like I’m grasping at straws.
My hardware is all AMD.

For what it’s worth, I thought maybe Discord was causing the problems, but I had random reboots without Discord open, either as a browser tab or a standalone app. I use the default client. I’ve had no crashes so far on Kubuntu or Ubuntu with the same workloads.

I’m playing Halo Infinite now without discord open in the background and no crashing for over an hour. But if I open discord, it’ll definitely reboot within a few minutes.

Ok, was having this same issue, until I checked and my hard disk was mostly full. I emptied the drive a little and the crashing stopped. I don’t know if it had to do with me having a swap file bigger than my free space. Just posting this in case that helps anyone

Same issue as described above. Also running Bazzite on a Lenovo Legion Pro 5 16ARX8 laptop with constant spontaneous reboots and no indication in system logs or performance monitor of a CPU/GPU temp or resource over allocation issue.

Mostly happens while running light tasks like web browsing or editing a text file in Kate which is the basic text editor included with KDE.

I am here to report the exact same issue.

Has anyone find anything yet ? Bought a brand new PC, decided to finally give Linux a try and I decided to go for Bazzite. From the first day, I started seeing some random crashes, sometimes more frequently than others.

At first I thought it was a Zen browser issue, because it always happens to be when I’m on the browser, that’s what I do 80% of the time (I work with webapps like figma etc). I tried Firefox for a day and a half and no issues at all. So I thought it’s most likely Zen, then I forced it to use X11 instead of wayland. It’s been a day without crash.
Just an hour ago, I closed Zen Browser, and I was looking at my System Settings, and it just crashed, a couple of minutes after I closed the browser. A couple of minutes is probably not enough, maybe some processes were still running, but I have a feeling it’s not especially when I saw this post.
Exact same issue, nothing shows on logs, it just reboots abruptly, no freeze, no error, nothing, it just reboots as if I pressed the reboot button on the case.

Exactly the same behaviour I am experiencing for about 1½ month on my gaming desktop, so did a new installation with the latest nvidia-open-stable release yesterday but no difference there.

I don’t know what causes this so I will try some hardware testing for the sake of testing.

I only play the native linux release of War Thunder and it only happens when I’m in-game. So here’a my system information:

Update:

Hardware looked fine as well as CPU and GPU temperatures AND when launching from Steam (although it’s a different installation) I still get these random reboots…
