Nvidia dynamic boost not working/disabled

Hello everyone! I am using a legion 5 with rtx 3050 gpu and ryzen 5 5600h cpu.
Somehow my gpu never boosts in Bazzite, despite it working properly on Mint and Fedora (and other distros such as Manjaro and Nobara).
Upon taking a look at nvidia-powerd.service, it gives me several errors that don’t help me point out the exact issue.
For context:

  • I use the latest Bazzite version & up to date,
  • Latest nvidia driver bundled by Bazzite
  • Used performance mode both through my laptop (red LED) and the OS (performance mode in Tuned)
  • The laptop is plugged in

Are you on battery or plugged in when this occurs?

Hello! It is plugged in.
I tried using “ujust nvidia” and “ujust configure-nvidia-optimus”, but to no avail.

You can use journalctl -p warning to see all warnings and errors or journalctl -p err -b which will show stuff since last boot

  1. The laptop does have a performance mode (quiet/balanced/performance), but in the BIOS it only display the current legion profile. What I can do however is switch between hybrid and dedicated. Switching to dedicated has the same effect.
  2. I don’t think I caught errors in dmesg. I can try to post a log with grep for nvidia, if it helps.

Other than that, I don’t see errors related to nvidia in journalctl -p err -b

nvidia-settings seem to behave finicky here. On which version of Bazzite are you? Have you tried rebasing to another image?

I am on the latest bazzite-nvidia-open iso. Basically the default option but for nvidia hardware. As for rebasing, I didn’t. All I did is install Bazzite and update it (i did update via “Software Update”)

Do you have the command to ujust --choose rebase-helper?

Are there release channels for Bazzite? I was thinking you could hop on a stable weekly (if not already)

Another thing which i found buggy (helped me with power issues on my RTX card ) is to add sudo rpm-ostree kargs --append=pcie_aspm=off
in order to disable Active State Power Management . You could try that out as well

  3. Wouldn’t that cause battery drain? Although I doubt that will fix it, because Active State Power Management was on in Mint and Fedora and I was still able to dynamic boost

I would try the latest stable from the list. On which branch are you on currently?

Regarding the battery drain, yah, that was my trade off. Although i’m on a HP Victus which is notoriously buggy with linux systems, the ACPI table is completely borked.

The error logs in the service show that the BIOS is telling the driver that it does not support the feature. I would try fiddling with bios settings or even try to update the bios itself.

Also, while looking at kernel errors, one might lead to another, so i would look for more than Nvidia. I’ve switched to Bluefin 2 days ago, and spent the two days fixing kernel errors. Power issues with my GPU masked another issue which was a faulty USB Hub, so i’d go through them just to be sure.

Like I said, I don’t think it’s a BIOS issue because I didn’t have these problems on Mint and Fedora. The bios is up to date. I tried to debug if nvidia-powerd had something finicky, but sadly it didn’t.
Unfortunately I will probably go back to Fedora until Bazzite stabilizes the Nvidia driver

Hm, i’ve checked my service and never had that issue. Maybe you could roll to Fedora 41 version of Bazzite? That should have an older kernel, maybe it will work better for you.

I found a solution : Restarting nvidia-powerd after disabling secure boot and then re-enabling it seems to fix the problem. Not sure how, but my gpu now can boost again.
