Kamail KDE

Bonjour,

I would like to known how to install KMail instead of Thunderbird, i see isn’t in the Flatpak (Flathub).

thank you in advance,

Create a distrobox and run it from there

ok thanks ,
but i will try to find the simple way to do it with distrobox , why Kmail is not in the distro Aurora by default? and if i install by distrobox my OS change the level of securites the system of imuable container ?

Just for information i’m not a specialist, i use Aurora as the simple way i need every day , internet, mail and videos and happy to use Aurora because is easy to install and to use it.

Aurora is based on Fedora KDE, so we generally stick to the same set of KDE apps that Fedora includes by default. We recommend that users install any additional KDE apps that they need via Discover as Flatpaks.

KMail appears to be in a strange situtation where KDE does not provide a Flatpak for it nor does Fedora include it by default. I’m not sure why that is. For these situations, you generally have two options:

  1. Layer KMail using rpm-ostree: rpm-ostree install kmail; or
  2. Create a Fedora distrobox, install KMail inside the distrobox using dnf and exporting the kmail executable.

For users unfamiliar with containers and distrobox, the first solution is probably the easiest.

Edit: The documentation for Bazzite applies here: Installing and Managing Applications - Bazzite Documentation. Using rpm-ostree install is by the far the simplest method just to get it working but it is typically used as a last resort. If you’re able to work through it, using a distrobox is the preferred method.

thanks for the information,
i try with the command of rpm-ostree install… and it was a not so good experience when the installation was finish and reboot there is some problem with the Kwaletmanager about passwords… i never try Kmail, it’s only personnal i don’t like so much for the moment i will prefer Thunderbird.

I have a another question my first installation with AURORA was 2 days ago and the date of the image dowload it’s the 16/02/2025 did they have any update of the system not the applications store Flatpak because at the first boot of the OS i change my preference to automatic Updates and not manually, what is the command to see some update was installed.

Thank you,

Fedora KDE Spin does include it. But I believe Kinoite doesn’t, so Aurora inherits that I guess.

There’s a Flatpak called Kontact which includes KMail and the other KDE personal info manager apps that use the Akonadi backend. (Looks like Kinoite does include that backend, but you use the Flatpak for the front-end apps.)

The whole Kontact suite is going to be replaced by Merkuro which will have flatpaks once they release.
