How to install bazzite with kernel 7.2 on new Hardware?

Hi,

I’m trying to install bazzite GNOME on an Asus G14 2026 Laptop with Intel 386H + Nvidia 5070 Ti.
I downloaded latest nvidia-open image from bazzite.gg

The live system has 7.0.7 kernel and boots without problem. But after installation boot stops with hardware errors. When looking at the grub entry i see that a bazzite version with linux kernel 6.19.4 has been installed. Which probably is too old for that hardware.
The Live system did have network access during install.

How can in install bazzite directly with the latest stable image, so i have support for that current hardware?

EDIT: the problem is I can’t ‘ujust update’ to the newest image, because I can’t even boot once. Is there any way to do that from the live system, or create a live system based on the latest bazzite stable?

From experience, GNOME does not always work. And from that, KDE is more stable. I doubt there is a way to do it, outside making an custom image.

If you want to update bazzite itself, try using ‘ujust upgrade’ or search for ‘Bazzite updater’ in the start menu. ‘ujust update’ from what I’ve seen updates “custom” apps (user installed software).

I hesitate to mention this since I’ve never been able to even understand the process described, but it might be possible to roll your own Bazzite version and install from that. But, I’m certainly not smart enough to figure that out:

It’s very surprising about the kernel versions you’re seeing from the Live ISO. Browsing through the releases on Bazzite’s github page, kernel 6.19.x is way back on Bazzite v20260429:

and kernel v 7.0.x appears in Bazzite v 20260605:

So, why the Live ISO would boot with a later kernel than what it installs is really weird.

I’d have thought the Live ISO would be built from the latest releases. But, I guess I’m wrong about that.

Bazzite v44 kernel is 7.2.1 while it ships with Nvidia LTS Kernel 6.18.44

If you were talking about Bazzite kernel, it’s faster to download new image with v44 and re-install.

Also, for information about big picture mode:

WARNING: Nvidia & Intel GPU support in Steam Gaming Mode and on HTPCs is available as a beta with known issues that cannot be fixed by the Bazzite team.

All I know is, that 30-, 40- and 50 series cards work with KDE version.

If the problem is CPU, then sadly, I am not knowledgeable enough to help. Cause I don’t know it it supports the new Intel CPUs. My 2 Intel rigs use older 12th and 13th gen.

I tried GNOME on my Thinkpad (AMD 7840u system), and nothing seemed to work properly.

And one last question: Are you using ‘Secure Boot’, and if so, did you generate the keys? (once you install it with SB enabled, you should not turn it off. Do it before install)

To answer your questions: No you can’t change the image from inside live installer. And there is a new Release of bazzite out (V44) for both KDE and GNOME.

How did you even get that old of a version of Bazzite?

Well, Live disks used to use generic/legacy drivers, so it would work on all kinds of hardware (sort of like Windows PE).

Thx for your answers. I needed some time to figure out the problems.

  1. There was no problem with secure boot. Keys were successfully enrolled, but it also appeared with secure boot off during the whole process.

  2. The bazzite installer image was the newest available through bazzite.gg. I couldn’t find any newer installer images. This one seems to be from April or May and is not in sync with the current bazzite releases you get through ujust update.

  3. Installer image kernel version and the kernel of the image that is beeing installed are also not the same, see: Bazzite Installation Guide - Bazzite Documentation "Additionally, it is worth noting that the install environment does not include all of Bazzite's hardware support, (for example for the Steam Deck Audio), as it is running a different kernel than regular Bazzite."

  4. The current bazzite release installed through the .iso with Kernel 6.19.14 seemes to have an issue with the Asus G14 2026 Laptop Card Reader, as boot stopped at:

I was able to get the system to boot by setting kernel argument pci=noaer in grub. (thanks to GPT 5.6^^)

  5. Afterwards i was able to update bazzite to the latest release with kernel 7.2.1 and the system boots normally without the pci=noaer kernel argument.

  6. There was also a smaller kernel/firmware problem with regard to the 5070 Ti that could be skipped by pressing enter. Now after beeing able to update to latest bazzite release, the problem is gone.

So in the end I’d say it would be nice to have more current live install .iso’s of bazzite, to avoid such problems.

Version 44 came out a few week ago (August 21, 2026 for laptops). Or is the asus install version non-updated? If so take the general laptop version (with the RTX graphics, like I installed on my Acer Predator with 4080). Tho, it makes no sense.

Edit: I see the issue right here -

Desktop Release: April 29, 2026, featuring GNOME 50, KDE Plasma 6.6, and Linux Kernel 6.19.x

You need the laptop version -

Handheld Release: August 21, 2026, marking the project’s largest update with Linux Kernel 7.2 and major driver upgrades.

You downloaded the Wrong version, it seems.

Edit: Well, I am glad you got it fixed.
