You read it right – Bazzite is 2 years old!
What an incredible couple of years this has been. When I started Bazzite I never expected nor set out to create what we have here today. It’s thanks to you, the community, and everyone who’s contributed over these two years that Bazzite is what it is now. I cannot thank all of you enough.
Bazzite has grown from a project started by accident in my living room to a custom image pushing north of 400TB/month in ISOs and 8 million pulls of the image on GitHub.
Noel and I also made an appearance on the Fedora podcast with Eric the IT Guy and Noah Chelliah this week if you’re interested in more of Bazzite’s backstory.
Lastly if you’re coming to this year’s SCALE Conference nearly the entire Universal Blue team will be there. I might even have exclusive Bazzite swag to give out.
The Future
Right now our main focus is image cleanup while we transition to bootc, the modern replacement for rpm-ostree that will make updates easier going forward:
- Accurate update progress bars in Steam gamemode as an added bonus!
- Utilities like QEMU and Sunshine will start to be included in the base images as well, making these even easier for users to interact with.
- We’re also looking at our previous DE promises, starting with Budgie when their Wayland release is ready, and only afterward we’ll take a look at Cosmic.
- Nvidia Gamemode images. These are not fully functional yet and we can make no promises given none of this is in our control, but we would like to start testing the parts that do work and allow the community to join in and see for themselves.
- Lastly, Kernel 6.12 can be found on our
:testing
branch, which has support for Intel Battlemage, including in Steam Gamemode, although it is not fully functional yet. We’ll be doing what we can to ensure this functions as well as it can on this new hardware.
