Correction regarding GPD Win5 Support for Bazzite

EDIT: An update to this post has been made available thanks to additional information recently brought to light and can be viewed here:

The original content of this post is maintained below for transparency.

Recently, GPD made a statement that an “official Adaptation” of Bazzite is happening for the GPD Win5, and that we have received hardware from them.

I want to make clear that not only have we not received hardware from them, we have no recent contact with GPD of any kind. A GPD representative appears to be directing their users to a discord other than our own for support as well. The Bazzite Team will never ask you to go to a discord server other than our own for support.

Please exercise caution, whatever they’re working on is entirely unofficial and out of our control, and will not be supported by us in any way. We ask GPD to cease using the Bazzite name, logos, or other intellectual property until this matter is resolved.

As a reminder, all Bazzite images are signed with the Universal Blue key via cosign and available only from the ublue-os namespace in the GitHub Container Registry.
You can download the key here, and you can verify an image via:

cosign verify --key cosign.pub ghcr.io/ublue-os/image-name-here:latest

If the image you’re about to use does not pass this check and purports to be Bazzite, it was not built by us and should be discarded.

What will you do if GPD refuses to cease using Bazzite name, logos, and other intellectual property?

GPD has truly embarrassed itself on the international stage

This isn’t even the first time they did some weird things though. I don’t think they care.

If anything, their target audience probably just hears “GPD Win 5 supports Bazzite” and in their mind Bazzite is already substituted with, “the unofficial SteamOS.” And that’s it - they got the publicity and that’s a net plus for them.

Indeed. GPD also claimed Valve approached them, offering an official SteamOS build on their Win Max 2 (following their insane crash-out over the Steam Deck, mind you)—only to release some atrocious Manjaro “build” months later.
