Bricked my device during installation

Hi everyone.

I was installing Bazzite on my ROG Ally X and got to the blue screen where it asked you to enter the password “universalblue” to disable secure boot.
Whatever I did, I could not enter the password (it wasn’t my keyboard - it was working fine). I tried typing the password, I tried tapping in the password field.

Eventually it went to the next scree, and now when I boot up I just get a black screen with a command line.

I can’t even get into the Bios to boot back into windows.

Have I bricked my device? I would really appreciate some help if anyone can. The device is only a week old.

Thanks in advance.

If you didn’t begin the setup then the OS should be intact. What are you using as the installation media? USB Flashdrive, a Memory Card (I assume it has a reader)? Did you remove it when attempting to reboot? It’s possible the system is just trying to read the install media and because of slow Read/Write it just seems like it’s bricked.

Thank you for replying so quickly.

Bricked is probably the wrong word.

Everything in the install went fine and I reached the screen where you have to enter the universalblue password to do something with a key to disable secure boot.

I was unable to enter that password for some reason so now everytime I boot the device it boots to a black screen with an error message (I presume because I was unable to disable secure boot, and now it’s in a screen which has Grub or something?

I had a look at how to enroll additional keys in Ally BIOS and came across a very similar issue on Reddit

As mentioned there - there should normally be an option to manage Secure Boot. If you can, you might be able to temporarily disable it and then boot to OS, then try to enroll the key from there.

To do it from terminal (when the system is booted): ujust enroll-secure-boot-key

And it seems like the Ally is trying to boot but is unable to because there are no valid boot devices - it doesn’t look like it’s able to even reach GRUB.

Again - I appreciate you. I did find that possible solution but when trying I get “error - ujust command not found”.

When I boot the system it literally goes straight to this screen. No terminal :frowning:

The problem is I can’t get into the BIOS to do anything.

Usually to get into BIOS it should be pretty straight forward - Power down the device, then press and hold “Volume -” and while you hold it then press the Power button (don’t need to hold the power button). If it doesn’t work, try it with “Volume +” instead (I have a Steam Deck and for me it’s the latter that works). It should work regardless of the OS installed.

Unfortunately (and it’s a bad design) the ONLY option to get into BIOS on the ROG ALLY X is to restart from within Windows. It’s a bizarre choice.

I’ve come to the conclusion that my best option here is to get an enclosure, format the SSD on another PC, then start again.

I do appreciate your help. May I ask one more question? I was wondering why I couldn’t enter the password. Tapping in the box didn’t work and tapping on the entry box didn’t either.

If you mean this, you have to use a physical keyboard. There is no virtual keyboard there, so tapping wouldn’t work.

You could try to get a bootable ISO that has “Enter EFI Settings” menu entry. GParted Bootable ISO might have that.

It’s the screen after that where you have to enter the password. My keyboard worked fine for enter to move between screens but whatever I did it would not accept me typing the password :frowning:
