Bazzite-desktop 42 boots to black screen

I updated to Bazzite 42 04/17 and it boots to a black screen. I get the loading spinner but when sddm should appear I get a black screen. I was booting into my old deployment on 41 (waiting on a fix) but I fat fingered it and deleted the wrong image last night so now it seems I have to figure this out to get my PC working again.

Checking the sddm service status shows it running but with the following errors:

Unable to find autologin session entry "plasma-steamos-wayland-oneshot.desktop"

Autologin failed

Failed to start socket server

If I run startplasma-wayland from a tty the desktop starts but no applications will run.

I can’t roll back to 41 and I can’t rebase to another Bazzite 42 image. When I try to rebase to Bazzite 42-20250414 I get the following error:

error: Importing: setting sepolicy from commit: mkdirat: Read-only file system

Journalctl is full of SELinux errors where “SELinux is preventing execute access to bootupctl on the file ostree” and similar.

Do I just have to bite the bullet and reinstall? Not sure where to go from here. Thanks in advance if you can get me pointed in the right direction. I’d really prefer not to reinstall if at all possible.

In situations like this, I ask myself - “do I trust the fix?”

If the answer is “No” - I reinstall.

Of course this is coming from a place where I trust my backup regimen. It is “easy” for me to perform a reinstall.

Well, I’m in the middle of a job search so I just reinstalled. I can’t afford the downtime and my install was thoroughly broken.
